Where is good place to buy a new hot water heater?  Everyone wants to know where the best place is to buy a water heater is.

Hopefully you know a plumber you can trust and you won’t have to bother, but for those of you that don’t know one here you go..

Hands down the best place to buy a new hot water heater, tankless water heater, boiler, storage tank, what ever kind of water heater/ system you need is the closest quality plumbing supply store to you.   For me that would be Bender Plumbing Supply in new haven CT, or Lewin plumbing in fairfield CT since I’m in the middle of the two.   For those of you not in Connecticut do a Google search for:   Plumbing Supply + (your town, & state)   That should be a good start, but if nothing comes up, or if you live in the middle of no where call a local plumber or two out of the yellow pages etc, be polite and ask where they buy their water heaters.

I just told you the easy way, but some of you won’t have plumbing supply stores near you. Or you want other ideas to find cheaper water heaters because the local plumbing supply store’s prices seems expensive/ money is tight these days.

I know, I hear it every day, and I empathize, but let me be the first to tell you that their are no such thing as cheep water heaters. So for those of you that don’t want to take the easy advice on where to buy one, let me explain in great detail how NOT to save money buying one.

For those of you that are determined to save money and thinking about buying one from a discounted scratch and dent store, from an company online, your local Home Depot -Lowes – Sears, or a buying a used one please let me help you think again.

1. Do not ever buy water heaters at scratch and dent stores unless you just need a temporary fix.  Water heaters are extremely fragile and dented water heaters are broken water heaters.  Water heaters have a thin lining of glass within the tank, and if dropped or other wise miss handled/.dented, the water heater’s glass lining can crack which greatly reduces the life span of the tank.

2.  Be careful shopping around the internet for “tank type” water heater online.  To have a water heater shipped intra state would work out, but to have one shipped cross country is ridiculous.  Water heaters are extremely fragile, and most online companies return polices are dicey at best, which is extremely risky if you ask me when ur dealing with expensive purchases. (We on the other hand hand/personally deliver all water heaters we sell in CT,RI, MA, and NJ)

If you want to buy a tankless water heater online, and want to have it shipped to you.  An electricity powered tankless water heater is practical from a shipping stand point because they aren’t all that heavy.   Gas powered tankless units weight about 70 pounds and are very fragile which are most likely pretty expensive to ship.  However hands down the most important aspect to buying /having a water heater shipped to you form an online company is the return policy. Personally I don’t like the idea of having any large, expensive, fragile items trusted to the good old UPS, but if you find a company with a provable return policy and the shipping costs are low or better yet cover by the seller, don’t let me stop you if your determined to save a couple bucks.

3.  Don’t bother trying to buy any kind of water heater directly form the manufacture.  Manufacturing companies do not sell tankless, or standard old fashion water heaters to home owners, or plumbers directly.  Plumbers and home owners alike have to buy tankless water heaters, storage tanks, and regular water heaters from plumbing supply stores.  Note: Most plumbing supply companies will only sell water heaters to licensed plumbers.

4.  The local home improvement store:  I can’t say it’s the worst place to go in the world, but it certainly isn’t the best.  Home improvement stores sell lower quality water heaters than real plumbing supply stores sell.  They also charge big money for their water heaters, when in reality your really paying for over inflated warranty on an inferior water heater.

5.  Don’t buy used water heaters.  It’s not illegal to sell them, as long as the seller is up front about it’s true age and it’s usage.  In some states licensed plumbers are not allowed to install them.  It is not illegal to buy one, but a brand new one is 300- 440 hundreds dollars you so why would you even bother?  A used heater will most likely be less efficient than a new one would be, and a used heater might need to be replaced again in a few years. That being said if your in a total jam, and you can find one that’s less than a year or two old, and looks like it’s in good shape, hey do what you need to do.  (I had a used water heater in my house for 5 years and never had one problem)  (I recently upgraded to a tankless)

Plumbers get better prices on water heaters than home owners do.  So for you home owners trying to save some money by buying your water heater yourself in order to avoid any mark up charges your plumber may charge you.  Realize that a licensed plumber that has a open account at a plumbing supply store gets “contractors discounts” as much as 30% less than home owner pricing on large products, so you most likely won’t be saving nearly as much money as time you’ll spend.

ps.  I recommend the Rheem Fury guardian for your next gas water heater installation.  It’s a great product for a good price.
